This guide's aim is to introduce you to the range of library services and resources we offer to staff and researchers. It is intended to provide a starting point so that you can make the best use of our facilities and services and help you undertake your teaching and research effectively.

Supporting your Research:
As a member of Newman University staff, you are entitled to borrow a total of 30 items at any one time. Standard loan items are issued to staff for 90 days and all other items may be borrowed in accordance with the loan period indicated for the item e.g. 7 day loan. Please note that fines will be charged for overdue items.
Joining the SCONUL Access scheme enables academic staff to visit and borrow from participating higher education libraries in the United Kingdom and Ireland. For further details see the Using other Libraries web page.

In order to provide effective links between the Library and the teaching departments, the Library has a team of 'Academic Service Librarians'. Each subject area has a designated contact from amongst the Library staff.
The role of Academic Service Librarians is to:
- provide a formal link between the Library and the designated department
- co-ordinate the library activity relating to the department
- advise on the selection and ordering of relevant library materials (books, journals, electronic information sources etc.)
- provide training for both staff and students in the use of relevant information tools and sources

Reading Strategies - How do I create one for my module?

The Library's principal aim is to support the learning, teaching and research activities of the University. Consequently, we aim to make available material included on module reading lists, whether books, periodicals, or electronic materials. For further information please refer to our Collection Development Policy.
In addition, where appropriate, the Library aims to develop its collections to support the research activity of the academic departments.
Order requests can be placed at any time during the year by contacting your Academic Service Librarian. Please provide the following information if known:
- full bibliographic details - author, title, publisher, date of publication, and ISBN if known
- number of copies
- preferred loan type (e.g. standard, week, short loan, reference)
- subject area or programme to which the item relates (History, Art, PGCE etc.)
If appropriate, obtain authorisation for requesting the order either from your Head of Subject, Subject Leader, or Programme Leader. Authorisation should be evidenced in your email.either by:
Members of teaching staff are encouraged (together with the Library subject contact) to regularly review the journal subscriptions relevant to their subject area. If you wish to request any new subscriptions to a journal title or database, please contact your Academic Service Librarian so that we can obtain pricing information and discuss funding options.
The Library aims to ensure that, wherever possible, copies of all core materials required to support the learning and teaching activities of Newman will be available in the Library. We do this by:
- systematic purchasing of materials listed in module bibliographies (as indicated for Course and / or Module Approval and Review Panels)
- maintenance of a relevant Journal Collection
- appropriate loan periods for high-demand items
- production of high-quality, accessible scans for upload to Moodle
In addition to these services, the Library can try to obtain copies of books or articles not owned by the Library through our Inter-Library Loans service.
The Library aims to contribute to the creation of a supportive learning environment for students. Members of Library staff offer a range of information skills workshops to support students in the development of their information, IT and research skills.
Sessions range from general induction talks and tours, to focused workshops on literature searching, using bibliographic indexes and databases, and accessing and evaluating Internet resources. In addition we can design sessions for distinct categories of students with specific needs e.g. mature, part-time or foreign exchange students.

Sessions can be either scheduled within the timetable, or offered at other times convenient to the students concerned, including evenings or weekends by agreement with the appropriate Academic Service Librarian.

Whether you're using our e-resources for research, or for teaching, it's important to understand the license terms attached, and a good starting point is the Library's Electronic Resource Licenses webpage
The key feature of this webpage is an easy to use chart of license terms for most of our individual resources. At a glance you can see the main license conditions attached - such as if you can save or print from a given database.
There is some useful guidance for academic staff - for instance, whether you can use content from a specific database within a commercial publication.
